Ginger Apple Shot

Gingerol, the main bioactive compound of fresh ginger, is a natural anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. It also has antimicrobial and antifungal properties, which can help your body battle illness. It's most widely found available in fresh, dried, ground and capsule forms but juicing it comes with all its benefits.

I decided to start drinking ginger after reading about its efficacy in reducing joint pain and arthritis. With wellness shots being all the new trend, I decided to pick up the Cold Pressed Apple & Ginger Shot from Woolworths. What I got was a bland, slightly sweet, free-from-kick concoction that I would not have known contained ginger without reading the bottle.

I decided to purchase all the raw ingredients, as well as a 12 pack small glass jar set from Westpack for R100 to store the shots in the fridge. I pulled out the juicer and got to work.

So the best thing about this recipe is that the ginger does not have to be peeled beforehand. While the skin is safe to eat, make sure you wash it properly to get rid of any dirt between the crevices. I've found a soft-bristled baby bottle brush to be the most effective in washing ginger root.

I experimented quite a few times with the recipe below to suit my palette because I wanted a throat kick without the tongue burning sensation. You can add or leave out some of the ginger if you feel it is too strong for your liking.

Once decanted into the jars, you can store it in the fridge for up to one week or the freezer for up to three weeks.

  • Since ginger is not typically a 'juicy' product, 1kg of fresh ginger yields approximately 400mls of ginger juice

 400 ml Freshly juiced ginger
 1 ½ litres Apple juice (unsweetened)
 100 ml Honey (organic)
 50 ml Lemon juice
 1 pinch Ground black pepper

Juice the ginger and apples and place with the rest of the ingredients into a 2lt bottle. Shake well before drinking or decant into smaller jars for daily doses.
